Answers to common questions about training, membership, facilities and getting started at VULKX Jiu-Jitsu Club in Battersea, London SW11.
Do you take beginners? Yes — most of our students start with no prior experience. Our intro classes are designed to help you feel comfortable and confident from day one.
I'm nervous. I've never done anything like this. Totally normal. VULKX is a space where you can learn at your own pace. You'll be supported by coaches and teammates every step of the way.
Do I need to be fit to start? Not at all. You'll build fitness over time. Classes are designed to meet you where you are.
How many classes per week should I attend? 2 to 3 times a week is ideal for beginners, but you can adjust based on your schedule and goals.
Am I too old to start Jiu-Jitsu? No. People start BJJ in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. Training is adapted to your pace and body — technique and consistency matter far more than age or athleticism.
Is Jiu-Jitsu safe? Will I get injured? BJJ is one of the safer martial arts because there's no striking. Our coaches emphasise controlled technique, safe partners, and knowing when to tap. Like any sport, minor knocks can happen, but we build a culture where looking after your training partners comes first.
Will I have to spar in my first class? No. Your first class focuses on fundamentals and drilling with a partner at a comfortable pace. Sparring (rolling) is introduced gradually, only when you and your coach feel you're ready.
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art focused on ground fighting, leverage and technique — so a smaller person can control and submit a larger opponent. It builds fitness, confidence and problem-solving, with no striking involved.
How does belt progression work? Adults progress through white, blue, purple, brown and black belts, with stripes along the way. Promotions are based on consistency, skill and attitude — not a fixed timeline. Kids have their own belt system with more frequent milestones to keep them motivated.
Do I need a gi (uniform) to start? No — we'll lend you a gi for your trial class. If you decide to join, our team will help you choose the right gi and sizing.
Can I watch a class first? We don't allow drop-ins to watch. Instead, we recommend booking an intro class — that's how you really get a feel for what we do.
Do you prepare students for competitions? Yes — if you're interested in competing, we offer performance-focused training and support. Just let us know your goals.
How much is a class? We work on a trial-first basis: book a trial class, experience how we train, and then we'll walk you through the membership options that fit you best — with zero pressure. Trial classes are generally free, and we'll confirm the details when you book.
Do you offer memberships? Yes. We offer a range of monthly memberships for adults and kids, with options for limited or unlimited classes, plus private sessions. After your trial class, our team will help you choose the membership that suits your goals and schedule.
When can I join? VULKX operates on a trial-first basis. To get started, book a trial class and experience how we train. Membership is offered after the trial, subject to availability.
When do I start paying? Your trial class is booked separately. Membership payments only begin if you decide to join after the trial.
What if I need to pause or cancel my membership? Life happens. You can freeze (pause) your membership if you need a break, or cancel with 30 to 60 days' notice depending on your membership type. We aim to be fair and flexible while keeping things clear and consistent for everyone.
Can I share my membership? Memberships are personal and can't be shared. Each member trains under their own account so we can maintain safety, progression, and class capacity.
Do you offer any discounts? Yes — our Community Support Programme offers a minimum of 10% off memberships for NHS staff, teachers, emergency services, veterans, Nuffield Health members and students. Proof of eligibility is required and one discount applies at a time. See our Community Support page for details.
Do you offer family rates? If more than one family member wants to train, get in touch and we'll talk you through the options — just ask us directly on WhatsApp or by email.
What days can I book a class? We run classes Monday to Sunday, and times vary through the week. Check our timetable page for the current schedule, then reach out to book — availability is limited, so the sooner you contact us, the better.
Do you offer drop-in sessions? Not usually, unless invited by an existing member. We run on limited spots per class to preserve quality. That said, email us and we'll do our best to book you into an intro session.
Can I bring a friend? Absolutely. If they've never trained before, they'll also need to attend an intro class. Speak with our staff — we'll guide them through the steps.
Do you run women's-only classes? Yes — we run women's-only sessions from time to time, though not every week. Check the timetable for upcoming sessions, or message us on WhatsApp and we'll let you know when the next one is planned.
What ages are your kids classes for? Our kids programme is for ages 5 to 15, with classes split into age-appropriate groups so every child trains with peers at a similar stage of development.
Is there a minimum age to start? Yes — kids can start from age 5. Our kids classes run up to age 15 and are divided into age-appropriate groups for the best experience.
Do you train both gi and no-gi? Yes — both gi and no-gi are part of the programme at VULKX, helping you build a complete game. Check the timetable to see which sessions run on which days.
Do you offer private sessions? Yes — private one-to-one and small-group sessions are available with our coaches. Get in touch on WhatsApp or by email and we'll arrange a time that works for you.
What should I wear to my first class? Comfortable gym clothes (t-shirt and joggers/leggings work well). We'll provide the Jiu-Jitsu gi for your trial.
What are the facilities like? Our training space is clean, modern, and purpose-built for Jiu-Jitsu, with professional mats and a calm, premium atmosphere inside Nuffield Health Battersea.
